If time will bless my hopelessness in all I say and do, the fear of adding one to us will turn itself untrue. So I'll feel different, somehow less hesitant, was always the kind to aspire to a steeple too close to ground, now I'll be learning there's an upside to down. The only goal that shines today is one that changes all, my style of halves and turning paths will change to rise and fall. No scares at night, no hurts held tight, let's say I let them go. And if I make the great mistake my nerves will never show. So I'll feel different, somehow less hesitant, was always the kind to aspire to a steeple too close to ground, now I'll be learning there's an upside to down. Down is the way that I'll go - I'll be singing my deeds before me. Down on the confidence road - I'll be singing my deeds before me. I'll be aiming, aiming, singing Amen as I'm aiming at the right side of down before me, oh... © 2023 Suzy Mangion

Ladybird 04:31
Where are you my lady? Where've you gone dear friend? I'll just wait for the hour when all fires will end. Your house has gone and all your children fly away, fly away. We'll meet again, we'll meet again. One can think of an answer, but two will soon return doubt, counting all of your worries that I can't figure out. Your home was here, though many children fly away, fly away, but stay the same, but stay the same... © 2023 Suzy Mangion

Will I play with them in the snow? Showing them games, holding a hand that I have made? Not in this year. Maybe next time we'll all be here. Will I be watching you in the sea? Shallows are warm, you're laughing at me, and in your arms someone you made, someone you'll always want to stay. So we waited and we thought about the way things don't work out or sometimes do work out and how I'll always be your girl. Now that I'm chasing him after that star, shooting across night after night, knowing my wish has nothing to do, nothing at all now it's all true. Some of the people for some of the time know about this, know how it is. But none of them know, for how would they know, all of the days we lost to snow. So we waited and we talked about the way things don't work out or sometimes do work out and how I'll always be your girl. © 2023 Suzy Mangion

From the roof I see the lights of Sant'Antnin go on at night. Bells have brought me back to somewhere I can't find in myself these days. On the edge there's a glow in town and a sense that I won't belong anymore. So where to lie when the fire is cold and the house you know not there anymore? Stella Maris guide the way for those in search of their childhood. Golden is the harvest and the way of return to those old enough. On the edge there's a glow in town and a feast that calls on Sant'Antnin. So let down inside, let the fireworks die and the house you know not there anymore... Sant'Antnin, save us all... © 2023 Suzy Mangion

Autumn Hymn 03:13
Oh my friend, what comfort can I lend? My words will count for nothing and foolish songs will end. You can't believe in everything or give your love to thieves, oh.... One will fall, and all that kept you ordered will leave you to be shattered and broken by the shore. No salt to fill your eyes with, no skin to hold you up, oh... Oh my friend, my comforts feel so slender, your age becomes my living, and now you come to me. I've heard you crying westward while I can only sing, oh... © 2023 Suzy Mangion

Old sun, new day waiting for a sign to heal you. Wait with hope, I'm standing in the shade of kingdom come. Tough but broken, lying-in the whole of summer. Sing for strong man standing in the shade of kingdom come, hoping for a glimpse of kingdom. And if it pulls you through, let it stay, let it stay. My heart holds you, my arms break. So long this state, will we get the grace to follow all the routes planned, standing in the shade of kingdom come, hoping for that glimpse of kingdom? And if it pulls you through, let it stay, let it stay. My heart holds you, my arms break. All these days will be forgotten. All these days will see you home again, again. All these days will be forgotten. Never weaken, set your sights on spring to come and take a turn with you, give it time, give it time. You're never leaving, put it out of your mind, you're never leaving, put it out of your mind, put it out of your mind, put it out of your mind. You're never leaving, put it out of your mind, you're never leaving, put it out of your mind, when you know the years are deceiving you, and the faith you had in your body long gone, you'll have to find a way, you'll have to find a way. © 2023 Suzy Mangion

The Story 02:28
I'll finish off the story then you can settle down, then you can hide behind your eyes again. The moral of the story is never let you down, is never hold your hand without a plan, and I am just a reader. The normal life runs backwards, coming all out of shape, losing the time we make in digging up the gold. I hear you say it's O.K., but in the night I know you run away to force your breath to slow, so I cannot believe you. © 2023 Suzy Mangion

Winter Hymn 02:51
It feels that I was the first to go, the first changed to someone you don't know. A warning, a light that's turning down, a rose in November, the garden kept without the words to say our names. In losing or keeping we have a certain heart, no matter how old when the moment comes to part. So sing bright and sing with all your might, for evening will follow to steal remembrance of the days, our place in line. © 2023 Suzy Mangion

Happy ending, not in the least, every ill wind is blowing the house down. I can't keep you safely indoors, winter ran through the whole of the new year. Count the days 'til this one's over. Ran out of luck, we ran out of luck, been running on love now a long time. No connections between the signs, so this is life they're telling the hero. If I stop believing in years fate disappears and so might the problems. Count the days 'til this one's over. Ran out of luck, we ran out of luck, been running on love now a long time. Ran out of luck, we ran out of luck, been running on love now a long time. © 2023 Suzy Mangion

Come on my star, I should be home with confident mornings and open skies. Day follow day, and I should behave with face to the future, but I can't go. Come on my star, it's only a mile, a corner for turning, a moment of trial.... How do my friends get through the night without the trouble of shaking heart? Follow them now, be who you aren't, wake up forgetting your trembling hand. Come on my star, it's only a mile, a corner for turning, a moment of trial. So pull out the stops, remember your song, I never expected to stay here for so long... ...come on my star.... © 2023 Suzy Mangion

You're all that I dreamed of, everything I thought about, all the words to know you're all that now. If we cross the snow line is there somewhere else to go? Out there in the cold white one by one. Walk a little faster, got some catching up to do, When we reach the snow line, only in our own time, I'll be there to keep an eye on you. © 2023 Suzy Mangion

about

Days Lost To Snow is the first full-length collection of songs by Suzy Mangion in 15 years.

In a sense, it's a lost album; Suzy started working on it in 2008, and the songs reflect things that happened in the intervening years - the hard times that most people encounter in their lives at some point. Illness and the road to recovery; disillusionment and growing older; caring and grieving. Motherhood and mortality. Hope, perseverance, putting one foot in front of the other. Lost promises; waiting for better days.

The songs are emotional and intense, and Suzy wasn't able to finish recording them. They sat on the shelf for over a decade. When she came back to them in 2023, it was clear that in their flawed, imperfect way they captured the feelings from that difficult point in her life. They couldn't be re-recorded; they had to come out as they were. Not glossy or re-worked - but a raw and powerful record of her days lost to snow.

As a result, the songs are more stripped back than her previous records, led by Suzy's piano and haunting vocal. Her trademark harmonies are still very much in evidence though - whether on the world-weary gospel in Upside Of Down, the deceptively sunny early-70s-Beach-Boys-meets-late-Abba of Ladybird, the small-choir-in-an-empty-chapel of her secular Winter Hymn & Autumn Hymn, or the criss-cross of harmony lines that question each other at the end of the banjo-led Standing In The Shade Of Kingdom Come.

Days Lost To Snow is her most direct and cathartic record to date, and will reinforce her reputation as an artist who can bring grown men to tears - as she sings about female experiences of motherhood and loss that are less often explored in popular music. Songs of sadness and doubt are always leavened by moments of hope, of better things to come. Of an upside to down.
